Health service
The increase in speed and dependability of computers together with access to a secure communication infrastructure also bring radically new possibilities in the area of health service. Depending on the level of the underlying information and communication infrastructure as well the diversity of cultural, political and legislative environments e-Health programs bring increased quality of health and social care for the population and favorable conditions for health and social care providers.
The CodeBlue solution known in Europe that monitors the health status of a patient by the means of BlueTooth technologies and the MobilAlarm project that monitors a mobile emergency line are just two examples of solutions included in comprehensive projects aimed at efficient distribution management, decision making, financing health and social care, creation of multimedia records about the health status of a patient, prescribing medication – e-Prescription solutions, outpatient healthcare provision, and other solutions for improving quality, consulting services, etc.
Providing health and social services is bound by the strict rules of medical ethics concerning privacy protection and provision of high quality transfer and processing of information well above standards. Therefore each e-Health project is based on solutions for secure transfer of information, authentication and access, most commonly by the means of smart cards. Besides authentication itself smart cards efficiently address the professional competence and authorization of their holders to practice their profession in a given role within the European Union member states as well as authorization to access certain parts or the complete health documentation of the given patient.
